The rounded fruit has a pleasingly naturalistic form, with hand-sewn seams and gathered detailing around the top and base. A short remnant of the stalk remains at the top. The shaded velvet gives the appearance of a ripening apple, with the colouring changing from yellow and ochre through to deep red. This piece came from an auction where it was catalogued as dating from the 1840s. Its strong sculptural shape and wonderfully mellow colouring make it a charming example of early sewing-room haberdashery and decorative textile fruit.
