The cast brass end supports are richly modelled with stylised foliate and mask decoration, and the sloped rectangular base is finely detailed with repeating border ornament and a central raised heraldic crest marked Patent. Knife sharpeners of this type were commonly used in the late 19th century, with the blade drawn carefully across the wooden rollers to clean and refine the edge.
